Good New Stuff: Rimowa Eyewear Collection
Classic-looking yet tuff? Yes please.
You ever make a mistake, and think you’ll never have a chance at fixing it?
Of course you have; this whole concept is why strong liquor and outlaw country music and 90s R&B tracks exist in the first place. For me (at least concerning this article) it happened about a decade ago. I was in the backyard of a friend’s place, checking out their basement underneath the house to see if maybe it would be possible to throw (ahem) a small rave down there.
Right as I descended the steps, I put my head down.
I was about to remove my sunglasses, when they fell off my head. They landed on the steps, and before I could stop myself, I stepped on them.
Yes, I am an idiot.
They were vintage shades from Yves Saint Laurent, and they had a vaguely Persol-like vibe but were a bit squarish. They were just different enough from Persols to make them extremely cool. And now they were absolutely broken. I also purchased them at a sample sale waaaay back in the day, so there was no chance of getting another pair.
We had the rave in the basement, and it was a decent party, but I would have taken it all back to get those sunnies in my life again.
So when I saw these new Rimowas, my heart skipped a beat or two. They’re very similar to my old YSLs, but have an interesting little design detail- the small rivets on the bridge of the specs. These come from the similar pieces on the sides of Rimowa luggage, and since most of us won’t be traveling much in the next few months, it’s nice to see Rimowa putting their design language to other uses.
Besides the aforementioned pair, Rimowa has a whole line of shades for various face types and sunglass style preferences. All of ’em look pretty sharp, including the clear-framed styles and some pretty rad modern interpretations of aviators. They’re not cheap (as is everything Rimowa-related) but as long as you’re careful with them when on rave-scouting missions, they’ll probably last you for years.
